Textured 9ct Yellow Gold Sandcast Hoops

These gorgeously textured sandcast hoops were made by Jamila following a visit to the world renowned Gold Museum in Bogotá. She felt deeply inspired by the organic textures of pre-Colombian gold, a material then considered to be of more spiritual and symbolic worth rather than holding value as currency. Gold was associated with the sun, the gleaming rays a source of spiritual power and goldsmiths were therefore highly regarded, being seen as capable of communing and transforming the immaterial into physical representations of the divine.

Due to the handworked nature of an age long before machines, the gold pieces were often imbued with the textures of the making process - divots from hammers and fingerprints, human marks we like to echo today in the jewellery we make. Jamila heavily textured the sandcast gold, shaped to resemble the fluidity of waves breaking at sea. Fun fact - the lost wax method of casting gold was also invented in ancient Colombia.
