Bert's Story: A Remodelled Heirloom

Young man wearing a saandcast diamond ring, it's made from heirloom gold cast in beach sand with a ruuged organic look that contrasts with the bright sparkling diamond.

"Inheriting my great-grandmothers ring meant that I was receiving a piece of family history. However, perhaps what I didn’t inherit were her small and delicate hands! Initially, her ring was a traditional design that didn’t draw too much attention - though when the sun hit the diamond, it would sparkle beautifully between your fingers. I wanted to re-imagine her ring and bring it into the 21st century, and so I visited Justin's workshop and spoke with his wonderful team to explore all the possibilities.

While a signet ring was an interesting option, I felt it was too traditional for me. Eventually, I decided to create a ring dedicated to my parents, featuring a strong, thick, and resilient band to represent my father and the beautiful heirloom diamond to represent my mother. I wanted the diamond to sit between the joined bands like Justin's rock rings, making a statement that it didn't need the gold's protection as diamonds are so strong. To add even more sentimental value, my parents generously gifted me some of their traditional Sri Lankan wedding gold (gifted to them in turn by my paternal grandmother) to mix in with the original gold of my great-grandmothers ring. Lastly, I chose to have the ring cast in sand from the beach my parents were married on, over thirty years ago in St Ives.
There was simply nobody else I would trust to make this ring other than Justin. I didn’t want something mass-produced; I wanted something unique, crafted with the exceptional talent and expertise of him and his team. What was truly special about the process was not just the stunning end product which I wear every day, but the journey to create it. The team made me feel like I had all the time in the world during my appointment for the designing process, and they helped ensure every decision was right. Their dedication and patience really transformed the experience for me.
Not only am I now the proud owner of a unique and precious piece of sentimental jewellery that is truly a tale of all generations within my family, but I also cherish the wonderful experience of creating it with such an incredible group of people."
Bert's ring is a sandcast version of our diamond rock ring, because it's cast in beach sand rather than hand-carved, it has a more subtle sandy texture rather than the deep highly contrasting texture of the original design. His heirloom diamond is also substantially larger than the 0.1ct stone we use in our original design.
We're always happy to adapt our designs to meet your materials or preferences - that's the beauty of having a piece of jewellery made bespoke, especially for you. Do get in touch if you have any ideas you would like to explore.
